Chung tai zen meaning1/18/2024 To be able to manifest our innate wisdom and compassion, we need to eliminate selfish desires and discriminatory thinking. What are the fundamental principles and virtues we can follow? Earlier we have talked about how in Zen practice we learn to find our inner source, which is endowed with innate wisdom and compassion. It is with these fundamental principles and virtues that we can strive to establish ourselves well as persons and fulfill successfully our duties in family and society. However, admit all these changes, some fundamental principles and virtues remain the same. Yet, in this modern age, knowledge, technology, and environment all change at a very fast pace, and it seems difficult just to catch up with all that is happening. In terms of duties, we should be charitable and aspire to do things that are beneficial to the world. As a person, we should be sincere, be trustworthy, and aspire to become great persons or even Buddhas. To do so, we should focus on two aspects, namely, how to establish oneself as a person and how to fulfill one’s duties in life. As we live in society, we aim to interact and function well with others. Zen practice must be rooted in one’s daily life. With respect, one dispels arrogance with compassion, one has no anger and hatred in harmony, one resolves conflicts and violence and with truthfulness, one nurtures no hypocrisy and deceit.
